PRESS RELEASE

1st August 2017
President Lady Joseph and Vice President Phillip returned to head the Grenada Bar Association

On Thursday 27th July 2017, the Grenada Bar Association (“the GBA”) re- elected Lady A. Anande Joseph as its President. Lady Joseph is a former Solicitor General of Grenada and the Chair of the Integrity Commission. She is joined at the helm of the GBA by reelected Vice President Rohan Phillip, himself a former Attorney General of Grenada.

The elections validated the efforts of the GBA’s previous term of office, which was an exemplary one. During that year, the Bar took the lead on public legal education which included forums on constitutional reform and critical analyses of some of our local laws; internally, the GBA focused on continuing legal education for its members by hosting a seminar that took a tough look at ethics and professional obligations for practicing Attorneys led by Honourable Mr. Justice Vasheist Kokaram, High Court Judge of Trinidad and Tobago, and Justice Rita Joseph-Olivetti (retired). The utility of the General Legal Council (which is the disciplinary body for members) was acknowledged in appropriately and fairly dealing with complaints from the public about members of the GBA. Three members of the GBA currently serve on the General Legal Council.

Significantly, the GBA celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court by participating in a Special Sitting in February 2017 and invited Justice of the CCJ and former Chief Justice Adrian Saunders to be the featured speaker at its signature Annual Sir Archibald Nedd Memorial Lecture, which focused on the history and future of the Court as it celebrated its jubilee year. The GBA also launched a Special Commemorative 50th Anniversary edition of its magazine “Oyez, Oyez” during July of this year.

The outcome of elections saw a good mix of Executive members being elected to serve. They include seasoned as well as upcoming and enthusiastic members of the GBA. The Bar’s Secretary is Skeeta Chitan; Treasurer Celene Edwards; and Council Members Evette and Joshua John (first ever mother and son duo to serve on the GBA Executive), re- elected member Sabina Gibbs and Deborah Mitchell.

The GBA reaffirms its commitment to continue to play its part as a leading civil society organization in Grenada and the region.
